PRODUCT SAFETY ADVISORY
Notice of Potential Unsafe Condition
Rockwell Automation issues a Product Safety Advisory when it identifies a product(s) anomaly that may potentially cause harm to personnel, capital equipment loss or environmental damage. Immediate action is required as identified below.
Allen-Bradley 1719-A8 Ex I/O 8 Slot Chassis Parts Clearance Requirement
Reference: 2020-08-003
Date: August 2020
This Product Safety Advisory informs you of a potential anomaly that exists with the Allen-Bradley® Catalog Number 1719-A8 Ex I/O 8 Slot Chassis. Clearance between the intrinsically safe I/O circuits of the leftmost I/O module and non-intrinsically safe network connections may not meet the 50 mm separation standard. Should a connection be made inadvertently between the intrinsically safe and non-intrinsically safe circuits a spark could occur, potentially causing an unsafe condition when operated within a hazardous environment.

– Product Identification –
The affected product is the Allen-Bradley Catalog Number 1719-A8 Ex I/O 8 Slot Chassis manufactured prior to August 1, 2020 (date code 2020/08/01).
For installed product or product not within its original shipping carton, the product identification information can be found on the product nameplate located on the back of the product. The product catalog number will be found in the CAT field and the manufacturing date in the Date field.
In the example shown to the left, the catalog number is 1719-A8 and the date is shown as the code YYYY/MM/DD. If the date code were prior to 2020/08/01 this product would be affected and subject to this notification.
If you are unable to remove the product to inspect the product nameplate, lack of the separation plate, as shown in the Correction section of this document, may be used to identify potentially affected product.
For product still in its original shipping carton, the product identification information can be found on the product carton label. The catalog number will be in the CAT field and the manufacturing date in the DATE field.
The example shown to the left locates the fields on the carton label. Affected product will have 1719-A8 in the CAT field and a date code of 2020/08/01 or earlier in the DATE field.

– Description –
A potential anomaly exists with the Allen-Bradley® Catalog Number 1719-A8 Ex I/O 8 Slot Chassis.
Important – If your installation does not use an I/O module in the first two slots of the chassis, the physical distance is increased such that it meets the clearance spacing requirement. However, Rockwell Automation recommends installation of the separation plate as described in the Correction section of this document to avoid potential future risk should the first slot be used as part of system expansion.
As shown in the example image to the left, the distance separating the intrinsically safe I/O circuits from the non-intrinsically safe network circuits is less than the 50 mm as required by standard IEC/EN 60079-14 for non-physically separated circuits. This distance, or a physical separation plate, are required to reduce the likelihood of a cross connection between the circuits, such as might occur if a connection is not fully secured.
– Temporary Workarounds –
The IEC/EN 60079-14 standard requires a minimum 50 mm clearance between intrinsically safe I/O connections and non-intrinsically safe network connections. Where this distance cannot be maintained, a non-conductive physical barrier may be used such that the distance around the barrier is greater than 50 mm. Until corrective actions can be taken as described in the Correction section of this document, customers can implement one of the following temporary workarounds –
• Where space permits, reconfigure the chassis such that the first two slots are left empty. This will increase the separation distance to meet the minimum 50 mm requirement.
• Install a plastic separation barrier sheet between the 1719-AENTR module and the first I/O module extending at least 25 mm or 1 inch from the front of the module and extending around the module as shown in the correctly installed reference image provided in the Correction section of this document and in images and illustrations provided in Appendix B of this document. The thickness of the separation barrier material must be between 0.9 mm and 1.33 mm.

– Correction –
Correction requires installation of a separation plate between the intrinsically safe I/O connections in slot 1 and the non-intrinsically safe network connections. Customers will be provided one separation plate kit catalog number 1719-SP1 for each 1719-A8 product on record. Customers are required to install the separation plate to correct for this anomaly. Instructions for the installation of the 1719-SP1 separation plate kit are available on the Rockwell Automation Knowledgebase Article ID 1127569 / BF25825 and are attached separately as Appendix B.
The image to the left shows a 1719-A8 chassis without the required separation plate.
This image shows a 1719-A8 module with the separation plate correctly installed between the 1719-AENTR module and the first I/O module.
Important – 1719-A8 product returns are not authorized on this notification.
Future shipments of 1719-A8 product will include the separation plate kit as part of the standard product. If you have affected product as described in the Product Identification section of this document and you have not received separation plate kits, or if the number of kits you have received is less than your installed affected product base, contact your local Rockwell Automation Distributor, Sales Office, or other place of purchase to request no cost 1719-SP1 separation plate kits. Reference this Product Safety Advisory PSA 2020-08-003 when requesting kits.

1719-SP1 Installation Instructions

Issue: Minimum distance between intrinsically safe and non-intrinsically safe circuits is not met in a 1719-A8 chassis with all eight I/O slots populated.
Impact: When wiring the 1719 Ex I/O system, you should adhere to the specifications set out in IEC 60079-14, as stated in the 1719 Ex I/O Installation Instructions, publication 1719-IN001.
IEC 60079-14 requires that a thread dimension of at least 50 mm must always be maintained between intrinsically safe and non-intrinsically safe circuits. However, when using the 1719-A8 chassis with all eight I/O slots populated, the distance between the terminals of the I/O module in the first slot and the RJ45 connector on the 1719-AENTR adapter is not large enough.
Resolution: Install a separation plate (1719-SP1) between the adapter and the first I/O module slot to help ensure that intrinsically safe and non-intrinsically safe circuits meet the minimum distance.

The following instructions show how to install the separation plate onto the chassis. These instructions will be added to the next revision of the 1719 Ex I/O Installation Instructions, publication 1719-IN001.
Mount the Separation Plate on a Backplane
1. Use a wire cutter to remove the pin that is located near the catch on the separation plate.
2. Hook the catch onto the label carrier at the top of the chassis.
